Iconoclast Transportation

The way I see it school dance attire is essentially divided into two parts; formal, and not.  The 'not' is easy to dress for, slap on some shorts, a crop top, keds, and the average teen is ready to go.

It's when we encounter the 'formal' where things get tricky.  My theory is it's the matching.  Match the dress to the shoes? or the jewlery to the shoes? Match the corsages?

I guess sometimes it is better to ignore all of the above and coordinate with friends to match your outfit to...

.... Your tractor.

Outfits paired with iconoclast transportation.   Who would've thought?

The Things We Do ...

Though my last post may suggest otherwise, there are some wardrobes that do change with age.

Cathy A* is one of those wardrobe shifting individuals.  But two small words can transmute this seemingly logical approach towards syle.  Parent participation.

So when the theme for a daughter's dance performance was declared, 'christmas in july', and someone accidently ordered the costumes in a large size, and a certain studio director refused to let the christmas spirit go to waste......

parents were required to wear ... The White and Red Skunk Tunnel

...... or as the director put it "the super cute candy cane ensemble!"

oooh gimme that polyester.

*names have been changed to avoid future candy cane conundrums

Never Ever Ever Land

Maybe Peter Pan had it right.

Sometimes the adult world's hard.  Bills, work, kids of your own.  And hey being a youth, I guess I don't know 1/2 of it.

But there's one thing I do know.

I see it all the time.

Adults rekindling with the juvenile inside them and releasing this child via wardrobe.

Let me explain:

this:

...becomes this:

roses are red
violets are blue
this backpacks pre-pubescent
an iconoclast are you

Example deux:

As an overly cheerful, yellow turtlenecked wiggle named Greg, once sang, "oh I LOVE flowers" (Picking Flowers, December 2008)

I guess this iconoclast feels the same way.
this:

...becomes this:

Maybe it's just me but the happy-go-lucky expression is what's really giving her away here.

Color me Mine a Tribute to Suzanne K. Langer

Born in Manhattan, Harvard graduate and artist, Suzanne K. Langer (December 1895 - 17 July 1985), once said, "art is the objectification of feeling."

I hope this demonstration created in the center of Times Square, NY, does her justice:

Pissed Bees

Things look better from a distance.  It's true.  Think about it. Did the roller coaster look that scary when you were standing in line?  Could you really see that zit from more than 2 feet away?

Yes things are oh so different when you can't see what's up close and in design this rule also rings true especially when talking about graphics

Take a peak at these shoes
Hey!  Cute shoes I little yellow..bees are they? Adorable.

.....Let's take a closer look...
We got ourselves a case of pissed bees!  Big eyed and ready to blow.

Generations Divide Us! Ugh..not really

So I feel like my generation gets a lot of flack.
             those teens are always texting
                  those teens are so disrespectful
and they are always playing with
                            there techno-whatsits
                                 while they chew gum!

So this post is to all you 21 century haters out there who whole heartedly believe I am part of generation of doom and disgust.

BAM!  Wonderin' where we got it?...
                               ...I've got an idea

This blog post isn't to say that we are drawing exact parallels to the past by mode of fashion.  It's simply pointing out that some things just don't change with time (regardless of the amount) ...It also makes great use of this hilarious bus photo.

You give us royal wedding hats? We give you....um..this!

With all the hoopla & headgear displayed at the royal wedding, the US thought there was no way we could every live up to the hat hype of April 28th 2011.

And then......we did:

wuzzy fuzzy goes neon

but if you're looking for something a bit more..cough...animal friendly may I suggest:

The Scoop on the scrubs

So here's a fact about scrubs.  They aren't attractive.  Want to hear another fact? There isn't much one can do to make them attractive.  Luckily these iconoclasts work. it. out.

Notice how she tied in the lavender pastel shirt underneath the butterfly abomination.  Well done Ms. Pediatrician, well done.

You try accessorizing an all blue. all NAVY blue outfit and I'll see what you come up with.  For right now a simple white tee and black hair-net resembling hat don't seem so bad.

For info on how to accessorize a suppressed scrub visit: http://scrubsmag.com/scrubs-accessories-for-spring-and-summer-2010/

Who knew the line between education and fashion could be so defined?

It's D block. French.  End of the day.  Completely tired, and Ms. P tells us we are starting a new unit.  The clothing unit.  My ears perk up at once because after all France is the fashion capital of the world and our textbook is called Discovering French so I'm pretty hyped...

.... and then I see this:
Valette, Jean-Paul, and Rebecca M. Valette. Discovering French Nouveau. N.p.:
     McDougal Littell, 2004. Print.

It's not just the awk positions these two 'average french teens' are
standing in
that makes this photo interesting Let me tell you about what
those shirts say.

Yellow stoplight 1: 'speak to me softly'
Red stoplight 2: 'hug me I'm French'

Later in the class a girl was asked if she would wear either of the shirts.
She responded with a pitiful look at the models and a 'no.'

Valette, Jean-Paul, and Rebecca M. Valette. Discovering French Nouveau. N.p.:

     McDougal Littell, 2004. Print.
Yeah...ummm.. no.

Valette, Jean-Paul, and Rebecca M. Valette. Discovering French Nouveau. N.p.:
     McDougal Littell, 2004. Print.

A pink, silk, leave dress most likely isn't gonna work.  Oh and I
wouldn't be counting on Mr. Dark Blue shirt on denim for any tips.

It doesn't stop at french books:

Greenes, Carole, Mirism A. Leiva, and Bruce R. Vogeli. Mathematics. N.p.:
     Houghton Mifflin, 2002. Print.

Looks like even my sister's math textbook is capable of providing
fashion iconoclasts.

It's these moments.  The moments when you open a textbook to
find a snapshot of a 'fashionable young french individual' wearing a
solid tee and capris that make you (or me)chuckle.  I sincerely thank
the color coordinated stylist on set at any of these shoots.  And come on
maybe there are worse things in the world (or at least the world of fashion
and expression)than looking like a put together youth.....even if you
are stuck on single colored tee's.

Get Ready for This One

My next post is coming later tomorrow and I can't tell you much but I will answer your 'what is the next post going to be about!?' question with a hint about tomorrows's post...

sorry about the delay but I have to look into the copyright stuff :)

Swarm of the Birthday Suit

Sitting in the car, stuck in the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco traffic.  Humming along, feeling swell.  All of a sudden out of nowhere hundreds of naked individuals on bikes zoom past me as they shout loudly to the world ,'hey guys check me out.  I'm nude on a bike.. yeah!'

After I recovered from the initial shock I began to think that having this much confidence in one's appearance is in a way a fashion statement.  AND it definitely qualifies as iconoclast.  So here you are guys, let the swarm commence...

* the obnoxious background laughing adds a nice touch, don't you think? ....yup that's me.

Cold Ankles?

Most of us know the feeling of cold feet both in the literal and personal sense but travel about 5 inches up the leg and you get this...

I like how the socks are bright red just incase the green cuffed pant doesn't draw enough attention to the open ankle..however it doesn't seem to bother this man so to each his own I guess
Someone doesn't look too happy...could it be the lack of circulation in the lower leg?  We'll never know...

If it's Fried, and it's on Your Side, Then You Should Hide

I couldn't believe this one.
For those of you who can't tell it's an egg purse.  A leather egg purse and hanging of the purse yeah, that's a slab o' meat also leather.  I never thought the day would arrive when wearing your food could be acceptable let alone trendy, really gives new meaning to 'protein pouch'

Can you even see the end of the rainbow with that hat?

St.  Patrick's Day.  Let's get something straight here not a lot of people know what this day is really about.   Actually few to none know the slightest history of this acclaimed holiday.  Still, in  America it gives us the opportunity to parade, party and drink so of course it's widely celebrated.

SO.. maybe that means that with all these activities we get a little ...funky with our wardrobe choices.
The costume company is very strategic in this advertisement.  Have the model make a sexy smirk to distract from the $5 price tag.
http://cdn.costumesupercenter.com/csc_inc/images/items/343x432/LA83477.jpg

According to one ST. PATTY's DAY site St. Patrick was know as the patron saint of Ireland....emphasis on patron saint
http://blogs.villagegreen.com/dallas/files/2010/03/Dog-Costume2.jpg

Well this is just...very disturbing.

Brings me back...

Was on the bus yesterday and saw this.
FLASHBACK!  I've only seen one other person who pulls off a sweater this loud
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_EnA32Xi0m3FiV5vVL6td0vtj5GDm0rFiyCeNko8oaU_yeseBAiSkkPl6m-VNIRRU8m7xHXZ9Uk1zie4VQPTzzbvd8dPBmNRkH3TCxp3ZDIcWdBEa2Lxul43gsD0RdkYMN1tP9BWwke7Z/s400/bill-cosby.jpg

...and I wasn't even born yet to witness the show.

Giant shout out to http://ugly-sweater.blogspot.com/ for the Cosby photo and helping me find a hilarious new blog to subscribe to!

Don't Worry A Post is on the Way

It's not that long after all. Happy waiting :)

For now I can't tell you to get ready to learn why overly accessorized spirited ST. PATTY's individuals are just the tip of the rainbow and fashion flashbacks!

There's a Time and a Place.... and This Ain't it

As I mentioned in my last post saturday was clean-out day and once we really starting going through my mom's stuff my eyes started to take in 'the 80's.'

Yup that's a plateau right there. You could lay wine glasses on those shoulders and we would not be encountering any spillage.

Well, it's all in the spirit of fun clean-out games.....until I see the plateau's cousin in a store
I didn't think it could get worse but what is that?  The collar looks like it was pieced together with a kids set of geometric shapes (by a kid I might add.) And is anyone else thinking what is going on with the pockets?  The pleats look like little arrows pointing to the crotch..wonderful.

Fashion Flashback

Saturday was clean out day in my house.  I personally loathe cleaning but these days do have fun parts to them.  It is on these days where clothes that haven't seen light in a....ugh.....few years (or decades) finally emerge out of the closet and get one final moment of wear before they are tossed into the give-away pile.

Clothes like this...
My mom says this was the epitome of maternity fashion.  I'm just glad I was still inside her and unable to experience the black ninja jumpsuit. (complete with stirrups for those extra high kicks)

You're Wondering Why it's Reduced?

You're cruising through the mall, taking in all that's new in the world of fashion and as you walk away from those pair of oversized pants you find yourself at the reduced table.  While your there you think, 'hey maybe something that's really in, really fabulous, and really tasteful is lying on this table...'

....HA! I must admit that it was hard to write that last bit with a straight face.  I once believed in reduced items being fashion forward but after seeing this sorrowful bunch I'm just not convinced there's any hope left.

It looks better if you tilt you're head to the left, close your right eye, squint and close your left eye.
Hey!  I know that design!

My dear iconoclast couture readers.  I deeply apologize for the lack of frequent updates.  My computer was recently damaged and it has been a hunt to get more photos!  Luckily the posting will return later today so stay tuned, keeping clicking, commenting, and appreciating our everyday iconoclasts.

Thanks!

Spring Trends: If this is what's in store.. RUN AWAY

It may be early but...

if you're in the fashion loop you know that spring 2011 is all about flowing florals.

if you're in your fashion loop you know that spring 2011 is all about what you want to wear and that's that.

and finally if you're visually confused you come up with this...

Old street vender had a farm

Yesterday was mother daughter shopping day and for mommy and me this means going downtown! Now as one may know, downtown has some funky stuff.  For example: those men who stand around an pretend to be statues. (side note: once when I was younger I went up to one of these 'human statues'.  He sneezed.  I ran.  I still thought he was a statue.)  But mommy and me time is a special, uninterrupted, normal bonding experience...right?

....We walk.  We stop. Mom's head does a 180º and what do we see?
They're back.  They're in a pack.  They're ready to attack.

To add to this a few days ago my cousin John sends me this.

A little less colorful but equally as distressing I assure you.

Backpack Attack

You're standing in a line waiting for....hmmm. ... a lattee.  Yeah, a lattee.  Anyway, you're glancing at your phone, letting out a sigh and suddenly your eyes fall on the guy in front of you and you say quietly to yourself.

Now, what the heck is that?
oh right... it's a turtle with neon flippers strapped to the back of a guy who is seven times older than the average age of someone who would normally wear this pack!

1/2 human 1/2 dog?

Wearing animals on our feat has been a trend for ages it seems.  From leather sneakers to snakeskin boots, animals just aren't in luck when it comes to footwear.

BUT hold your horses fashionista iconoclasts there's a new twist.  Now it's not about wearing animals on our feet.....it's about fully embodying them from  knee down..

Seeing the resemblance??? cuz I'm currently worried about fido over here.

A Salute to The Colorful Traveler

Airports, Bus stations, Train stations, etc.  These are all places where people feel the need to umm...get comfy.  Now let's start by saying I don't really like no, I strongly dislike it when people wear PJ's or nightwear to an airport.  You know it's stronger than a dislike it's an .....aversion if you will.  Not to the people expressing themselves all over the 3 butt cheek sized sweats but to the general idea of 'oh I can look good once I get there.'  Newsflash I can almost guarantee you that more eyes will be seeing you in this airport than wherever your destination may be.

..so what do we do?  We go against the norms...we go..RAINBOW and we travel in style

Hard to beat a pair of street shoes with more color and funk than the entirety of 'Dora the Explorer's World'
This bicolored woolly mammoth of a coat has got more spunk than those ill fitting pants and more fluffy goodness than could ever fit in an ugg.

SO next time you travel take the 5 extra minutes required to slap some actual clothes.  Maybe try a hint of what these iconoclasts are suggesting, because after all no one really wants to see those jammies....even at cruising altitude.

It Kind of Looks Like......

You're watching the oscars.  Well, no, actually you're watching the pre ceremony red carpet event.  All-of-a-sudden a dress comes on and you know you just know you've seen it before. Some part of that dress..and eugh..gosh this is frustrating because you know you've seen it and then remember you have...

...because it slightly resembles your lamp shades in the corner.  This is for those times...

http://www.marieclaire.com/cm/marieclaire/images/W7/mcx--Florence-Welch-oscars-lgn.jpg

Unfortunately, becoming compared to a stack of lampshades is an upside to some...

Yup.  Fungi on a tree not a great red carpet look...

Just a note:  this isn't to offend, personally speaking Florence and Cate here are some of my fave iconoclasts, even if their fashion does occasionally look like diarrhea color inspired lampshades and tree mushrooms.

Oscars - Chest Dressed List

When I got a request to cover Oscar fashion I was thrilled! There are two main reasons to watch the red carpet pre show.  1) The fashion is entertaining 2) the comments made by the 'fashion police' dress judges is equally entertaining.

SO... since this is such big event and I'm still dissecting sunday's fashion it's gonna be a two day event.  It starts today with ..'THE CHEST DRESSED LIST'

Designers are always thinking of new ways to help women look good, sleek and sexy especially as their garment is gonna appear on the red carpet.  There are many creative strategies to this like last year's Zoe Saladana

http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2010-03-07-97514964.jpg

Maybe if we throw big bird's purple cousin at the bottom of the garment it will make her already minuscule torso appear even smaller!

Since this direction didn't go over so well designer's this year have taken the easy way out.  Feature the boobs...

http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jj1/2011/02/blanchett-oscars/cate-blanchett-2011-oscars-05.jpg

'Just in case you can't find it my chest is right inside this circle.  Inside the purple ring of intricate beading..'

http:https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH3r2xFFBXHiClwCROww5hop9BQYn-RV08P6Mn9Mkpdlr-dXKr3ev9qSWiw0NxkxLP0KsioxWkiuNp84N92FQIjhawz30MKnfasIMeHXjiX_mIkf9YYdmrhIGf-A7ot8eBKdnBxocSChX7/s400/1.Mila+Kunis+in+Elie+Saab.jpg

I'm pretty sure those purple doilies aren't as supportive as they look...and they don't look supportive.

Mad as a HATter to put it simply...

Alrighty, in the world of headwear it has all come down to this.  We've had the hat awards and the animal hat recognitions but now the two oddest hats I have ever seen on this very blog......
The albino blood sucking ostrich
 The multicolored dread-loch

Keep your eyes peepin for my next post An Exclusive look at Oscar Fashion
